Hey, just a thanks. I have an Old Macbook Pro 17" (Dual Intel). The fan started roaring like a jet tonight for the first time ever. Terrified me. Your trick worked and I have no idea why.

Thanks so much!

i have used the method hereby described and i have found out that most of the space on my hard disc is used on "other" ....some of the space is used for movies, some for audio, some for photos....but most of it for "other"....any chance to find out what this other is? i am running out of free space and if i know what "other" is...i could maybe avoid deleting my music, movies and photos...and delete some of the "other" instead...wow!

Thank you so much for writing this article. Im looking to purchase a Mac Pro in the next month for the sole purpose of recording vocals and my ukulele. Yours was one of the first links I found and I really appreciate the great info. Im a gadget girl myself and like to think I'm pretty knowledgeable about current technology but home recording equipment is not my forte. I feel like I know what I'm looking for now THANKS AGAIN!

Hi, this is wonderful! Thanks so much for all the info! I want to get Mac Book Air 11 and use it for editing video in Final Cut Pro, among other things. Is this too crazy? I mean, how well would it handle editing in HD? I could use an external monitor for visibility. I'd appreciate anything you can tell me about this. Many thanks!

Hello,
Thanks for the information. However, I would like to know what is included in the grouping 'Other'. I have a MacBook Air, 64GB, so space is important. I have about 20GB in the grouping 'Other' so it would be good to know how this grouping is put together because applications, such as MacKeeper tell me that I have more space than the above method is showing me.

I have a 2010 MBA, 13". Routinely had 7-9 hours of battery life. Could go all day without carrying my charger.

Two weeks ago, I updated to Lion and my maximum battery life plummeted to 2-3 hours. It became noticeably hot just above the keyboard. No other changes, no new software, no changes in behavior.

I took it to the genius bar. Diagnostics said everything was running fine. They kept it for five days because they thought my battery was separated at one corner. I received a new battery with NO IMPROVEMENT in my battery life.

Strongly believe this is a Lion issue...There's a thread in the apple support communities from people who have noted the same. Someone found longer battery life and lower temps after upgrading to 10.7.3. Just tried it, but without immediate success. (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3304547?start=0&tstart=0)

Try to close all applications. Not with the X on the left side, but really closed, so there is no blue light under the icon in the dock. Then test again. Did you enable click to play in Safari? Did you enable html5 on youtube.com/html5? And it you're using Chrome, try my advice below to enable click to play for that browser.

Excellent article, this got my battery to behave normal again. It appeared that flash was using cpu time, even if I did not actively use it (ie a paused video, a banner on a site that was in another tab, etc). What I did to save energy while using Chrome was:

1. in Chrome go to chrome://flags
2. enable click to play
3. go to chrome://settings/content
4. under plugins enable click to play

This will block any plugin - including flash - until you click on the video, banner, etc, to enable it only for that specific video, banner, etc. There will also be an icon in your address bar if something is blocked. You can click on that to temporarily enable plugins for the site, or enable them forever for that site.

One downside: it is said that this setting is reset to block al content instead of click to play with each update. You will have to manually enable it again.

I just bought my MBA 2 days ago and noticed that loud fan noise too even I'm not using any app or other programs. I was already disappointed the fact that I'm only using it for just 2 days. After doing the SMC reset, voila! It was fixed! Thanks Chris for this workaround and Tasman for this helpful article. :)

I purchased my MBA after researching various sites but after reading the information you provided I was better prepared to make an informed decision. I purchased 2 MBA's one for my wife and one for myself. I'm happy to say that on average with casual use i.e. browsing light gaming and routine tasks that i average 5-7 hours. We have the 2011 MBA 13" i5 256gb models. They are for lack of a better term awesome. Great info long past the original posting. Great work I hope this article continues to help others make better informed decisions in the future.

Huzzah!

Went from 6492rpm down to 1992rpm with an SMC reset.

An eery silence replaces the mini hairdryer I was surfing the net with.

Thanks!
